Dutch, 1626–1679
Jan Steen (c. 1626–1679) was a Dutch painter of the Dutch Golden Age, recognized for his genre scenes that combined psychological insight, humor, and vivid color. Born in Leiden to a Catholic brewing family, he attended Latin school and later co-founded the painters' Guild of Saint Luke in Leiden. Steen managed a brewery in Delft and lived in several Dutch cities, including Warmond and Haarlem, before returning to Leiden, where he spent his final years. His paintings often satirized the Dutch bourgeoisie, and he also ran a tavern after the art market collapsed in 1672.
