A Saint with Angels and Skeletons — History & Facts
A swirl of flowers and radiant beams draws the eye to the heart of A Saint with Angels and Skeletons, where a saintly figure, flanked by an attentive companion, stands embraced by a host of angels. The scene is anything but tranquil: the living and the dead jostle for space, as grinning skeletons press in from every side, their hollow eyes fixed on the central drama. The angels, with their sweeping wings and gentle gestures, seem to shield the saint from this encroaching ring of mortality, while putti peer down from above, their faces a chorus of curiosity and concern.
The dense black of the skeletons and the delicate white of the clouds create a tension between menace and salvation, life and death, that is only heightened by the exuberant tangle of roses at the figures’ feet. Created by José Guadalupe Posada around the turn of the twentieth century, this print belongs to a world where the boundaries between the sacred and the profane, the living and the dead, were never entirely fixed. Posada’s prints—widely circulated in broadsides and chapbooks—gave visual form to the anxieties and hopes of a rapidly changing Mexico, where revolution, faith, and death mingled in everyday life. The presence of skeletons, a hallmark of Posada’s style, reflects the era’s fascination with death as both a social equalizer and a source of dark humor.
Preserved today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection, this print invites us to linger in its crowded borders and to wonder at the uneasy dance between angels and bones.
