Apple Trees in Blossom — History & Facts
When Claude Monet painted Apple Trees in Blossom in 1872, he was living in Argenteuil, a small town on the Seine that became a crucible for the birth of Impressionism. That spring, Monet was joined by fellow painters including Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet, all drawn by the promise of light and color in the blossoming orchards. This was the same year Monet completed Impression, Sunrise, the painting that would give the movement its name and spark both enthusiasm and scandal at the first Impressionist exhibition two years later.
Apple Trees in Blossom stands as a quiet witness to this feverish period of innovation and camaraderie. The scene Monet chose is a moment of gentle abundance: apple trees heavy with pale blossoms, their branches arching under the weight of new life. Dappled sunlight flickers across the grassy ground, painted in quick, broken strokes that dissolve solid forms into shimmering patches of color. The eye is drawn along the receding rows of trees, where a figure—perhaps Camille Monet or their young son Jean—moves among the blooms, grounding the landscape in lived experience.
Unlike the formal orchard views of Camille Pissarro, Monet’s approach is less about structure and more about the sensation of standing in the orchard, surrounded by light, air, and the brief glory of spring. The precise early history of Apple Trees in Blossom is not fully documented; like many of Monet’s Argenteuil canvases, it was likely painted en plein air and sold through the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who championed the Impressionists at a time when the official Salon rejected them. Over the years, the painting has passed through private collections and exhibitions, its attribution to Monet never in serious doubt. Today, it is recognized as a key example of Monet’s first mature phase, when his fascination with fleeting effects of light and season began to reshape the course of modern art.
