A solitary elderly man with a full white beard and a dark cap emerges from a shadowy background, his face turned slightly to the right and his eyes cast downward in quiet contemplation. The light falls strongly from the left, illuminating the man's forehead, nose, and the upper part of his beard, while the rest of his features dissolve into deep shadow. His bushy eyebrows and deeply furrowed brow are rendered with a textured, almost sculptural quality, emphasizing the age and character in his face.

The background is a dense, velvety black that frames the head in an oval, focusing all attention on the sitter’s features and lending the portrait a sense of intimacy and immediacy. Subtle highlights on the man's cheekbones and the bridge of his nose contrast with the darkness around his eyes, giving his gaze a sense of depth and introspection. The composition is tightly cropped, with the top of the head nearly touching the upper edge of the oval, and the beard fading into the lower darkness, which enhances the sense of immediacy and presence.

A faint, crescent-shaped chain or ornament is just visible below the beard, rendered with a few swift, bright strokes, adding a subtle detail to the otherwise austere depiction. The subject’s expression is pensive, with slightly pursed lips and a furrowed brow, suggesting a moment of reflection or melancholy. Paint is applied with visible, confident strokes, especially in the highlights and the beard, while the shadows are blended to near-black, creating a dramatic contrast.
