Disrobing of Jesus — History & Facts

Jesus Christ stands at the center of the scene, his gaze lifted upward and his right hand raised to his chest, as soldiers and attendants crowd around him. A rope encircles his neck and runs across his chest, held by a figure in green at the right, who reaches forward to pull at his garment. The bright red robe worn by Jesus dominates the composition, its folds rendered with sweeping, expressive brushstrokes that catch the light and create a sense of movement.

To the left, a soldier in gleaming armor stands with his hand on his hip, his face turned toward the viewer, while behind him a group of men press forward, their faces animated with tension and curiosity. At the lower edge, two women in blue and white veils kneel close to Jesus, their faces marked by sorrow, while a third figure in yellow bends forward, his head bowed. On the right, a man in yellow and white kneels and works with a tool on a wooden plank, his muscular arms and intent posture suggesting physical labor.

The background is densely packed with soldiers, their spears and halberds rising in a jagged line against a patch of blue sky, and their helmets and armor reflecting flashes of light. The faces in the crowd are varied and expressive, some turned toward Jesus, others engaged in conversation or looking away, creating a sense of agitation and drama. Light falls strongly on Jesus and the figures in the foreground, heightening the contrast between the luminous reds, blues, and yellows of their garments and the darker, shadowed faces behind.

The paint surface appears smooth in the faces and hands, while the fabrics are modeled with energetic, visible brushwork, especially in the red and yellow drapery. The composition is tightly constructed, with nearly every part of the canvas filled by figures, leaving little open space except for the sliver of sky at the top.
