Execution by Garrote at Mixcalco — History & Facts
A crowd leans forward, hats bristling like a field of thistles, as the drama on the scaffold takes center stage. The eye is drawn to the figure at the heart of the scene—a man, mouth agape in what might be a final plea or a gasp, his limbs splayed in tension. Beside him, a priest thrusts a cross aloft, his face animated, perhaps offering last rites or urging repentance.
The executioner, caught mid-action, is all business, his body angled with the practiced efficiency of ritual. Every line in this print by José Guadalupe Posada presses the viewer into the moment’s uneasy intimacy: the crowd’s faces are blank, almost mask-like, as if the spectacle has dulled their humanity. Works like this, produced in Mexico between roughly 1880 and 1910, belong to a world where printmaking was the people’s newsreel—cheap, direct, and unflinching. Posada’s prints often chronicled the raw realities of public life, from executions to celebrations, feeding a hungry public’s appetite for both information and sensation.
Such images were sold in markets and pasted on walls, their immediacy a sharp contrast to the genteel oil paintings of the elite. The garrote, a method of execution, was a grimly familiar sight in Mexico’s turbulent nineteenth century, and Posada’s stark lines refuse to let the viewer look away. History has kept few traces of the individual stories behind these scenes, but the print’s restless energy invites you to search every face for a flicker of recognition.
