Exterior of Saint-Lazare train station, arrival of a train — History & Facts

A locomotive emerges from dense clouds of steam at the center foreground, its two glowing lights piercing the haze as it arrives outside the Saint-Lazare train station. The train tracks sweep in from the lower left, guiding the viewer’s gaze toward the train and then into the heart of the city beyond. Billowing white and blue-grey smoke envelops much of the scene, partially obscuring the buildings and softening their outlines.

On either side, tall Parisian apartment blocks rise up, their pale facades rendered with loose, vertical strokes and hints of shadow. The sky above is a wash of pale grey and lavender, echoing the vapors below and creating a sense of damp, atmospheric light. Touches of green and ochre appear in the lower left, suggesting foliage and the embankment beside the rails.

The brushwork is rapid and visible throughout, with thick, energetic marks describing steam, architecture, and ground alike. Details of the train itself are blurred by the surrounding steam, but the engine’s dark mass and the suggestion of carriages behind are discernible. The composition is anchored by the strong verticals of the buildings and the horizontal sweep of the tracks, balancing structure and movement.

The overall palette is cool and muted, dominated by greys, blues, and creams, with only the train’s lights providing a touch of warmth. Several small, indistinct figures stand near the train, their forms blurred and partially lost in the steam at the lower center and right. In the lower right corner, the artist’s signature appears in dark paint, anchoring the composition.

The upper left and right corners are dominated by the facades of tall buildings, their windows and rooftops loosely suggested with quick, vertical dashes. Patches of dark green and brown in the lower left suggest shrubbery or trees along the embankment, contrasting with the pale tones of the steam and sky. Claude Monet painted this view in 1877, focusing on the arrival of a train at the exterior of the Saint-Lazare station. The title, Exterior of Saint-Lazare train station, arrival of a train, identifies both the location and the event depicted.
