In the first version of the Landscape with a Waterfall Segers added shadows with hatching (Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin 963-13, RP-P-H-OB-825, RP-P-OB-826).

Here, in the second version, the dark passages are the result of direct etching: parts of the plate were exposed to the etching acid, while the light passages were covered with stopping-out varnish.
