Hercules Segers

Dutch, 1589–1638

Working in Haarlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague during the Dutch Golden Age, Hercules Segers trained under Gillis van Coninxloo and became known for experimental landscape paintings and highly innovative printmaking. He produced etchings using techniques such as drypoint, aquatint, and hand-coloring, often printing on colored paper or cloth and altering the size and surface of his works. Segers experienced financial difficulties, moving several times and selling art, and his reputation grew after his death, especially for his etchings. Rembrandt collected his works, and most surviving impressions are now in museums, with the Rijksmuseum holding the largest group.
