Madonna of Chancellor Rolin — History & Facts
Nicolas Rolin kneels in prayer on the left, facing the Madonna and Child who are enthroned on the right. Rolin is dressed in an elaborate overcoat with patterned fabric and fur lining, his hands pressed together in devotion. A large book rests on a blue cloth-covered table before Rolin, positioned close to the edge of the checkerboard floor.
Mary sits opposite Rolin, her long hair falling over her shoulders, and she is enveloped in a voluminous red mantle with an ornate border. The Christ Child sits on Mary's lap, holding a globus cruciger in his left hand and raising his right in a gesture of blessing. Behind Mary, an angel with multicolored wings and a blue robe holds a crown above her head.
The three main figures are set within a grand loggia, marked by tall columns and decorated arches. The floor is covered with a checkerboard pattern of colored tiles, which extends beneath all the figures. Through the arches, a detailed cityscape unfolds, with a river, a bridge with towers, and distant hills and mountains under a luminous sky.
Two men in chaperons stand at the balustrade in the middle distance, looking out over the landscape. A small enclosed garden filled with flowers appears just outside the columns, separating the figures from the city beyond. Near these men, two peacocks and two magpies are visible, set among the stonework and greenery. The painting is attributed to Jan van Eyck, a leading figure of Early Netherlandish painting.
It dates from the 15th century, within the period from 1400 to 1450. The scene presents a sacra conversazione, with the Madonna and Child appearing before the donor in a unified, richly detailed space. In 2024, following conservation, it was featured in a special exhibition at the Louvre.
The work is celebrated for its meticulous rendering of textures, architectural elements, and distant landscape, characteristic of Early Netherlandish painting.
