Portrait of a Couple probably Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen — History & Facts
Few portraits from the Dutch Golden Age have sparked as much curiosity as Portrait of a Couple probably Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen by Frans Hals. The painting is one of the earliest known double portraits in the Northern Netherlands to show husband and wife outdoors, relaxed and smiling, rather than formally posed indoors. Scholars have long debated the identities of the sitters, but the prevailing theory links them to Isaac Massa, a wealthy merchant and diplomat, and his new bride Beatrix, painted in the year of their marriage, 1622.
This informality was radical for its time, suggesting a new approach to marriage and intimacy in portraiture. The couple reclines beneath a tree in a sunlit garden, their bodies angled toward each other, hands gently entwined. Isaac leans back with an air of ease, his gaze direct and open, while Beatrix, dressed in delicate lace, turns toward the viewer with a subtle, knowing smile. The garden setting, rare for its era, hints at fertility and harmony, while the entwined hands and relaxed postures speak of affection and partnership.
Hals’s loose, lively brushwork brings a sense of immediacy and warmth, in marked contrast to the formality of Rembrandt’s later double portraits such as The Jewish Bride, where the figures are more posed and introspective. The painting’s early history is not fully documented, but it likely remained in private hands for centuries, passing through Dutch collections before entering the public eye. Its attribution to Frans Hals has never been seriously contested, and it is now considered a key work in his career, marking a turning point in the portrayal of personal relationships. Today, Portrait of a Couple probably Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen hangs in the Rijksmuseum, where it continues to charm visitors with its lively depiction of love and companionship in seventeenth-century Haarlem.
