Portrait of Jacob Pietersz Olycan (1596-1638) — History & Facts
A man stands turned slightly to his left, his right hand resting on his hip and his left hand holding a broad-brimmed black hat at his side. His gaze meets the viewer directly, and a faint, self-assured smile plays on his lips beneath a carefully groomed moustache. He wears a striking black outfit richly decorated with floral patterns and intricate embroidery, the surface catching the light in a subtle play of texture and sheen.
The sleeves of his doublet are transparent, revealing striped bands beneath, and both wrists are adorned with elaborate white lace cuffs. A voluminous white ruff encircles his neck, its crisp folds painted with delicate, feathery brushstrokes that contrast with the dark, heavy fabrics of his clothing. Pinned to his chest is a silver ornament, its fine detail rendered with a few swift, precise touches of paint.
The background is a simple, muted brown, which sets off the figure and his costume without distraction. Light falls from the left, illuminating the sitter’s face and the textures of his garments, while casting gentle shadows that model his features and give depth to the folds of his cloak. The brushwork varies from the smooth, almost polished treatment of the skin to the more textured handling of the black fabrics and the lively, flickering strokes in the lace.
At the upper right, an inscription notes the sitter’s age as twenty-nine and the year 1625. The lower left corner of the painting shows the man’s hand gripping the edge of his hat, with the fingers rendered in soft, naturalistic tones against the dark fabric. The background is a flat, even brown with subtle tonal variations, and no objects or architectural elements are visible.
Along the right edge of the figure’s cloak, the paint is handled loosely, with broad, sweeping strokes suggesting the folds and weight of the fabric. The light falls most strongly on the left side of his face and hand, creating a gentle highlight on his cheekbone and casting a soft shadow along the right side of his jaw and neck. Frans Hals painted this portrait in 1625, depicting Jacob Pietersz Olycan, a man born in 1596.
