Frans Hals

Dutch, 1591–1666

Frans Hals (c. 1582–1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who lived and worked in Haarlem. Born in Antwerp, he moved to Haarlem as a child due to unrest in the Spanish Netherlands. Hals specialized in portraits for wealthy citizens, including individuals, couples, families, and groups, as well as tronies for the open market. His style contrasted a subdued palette with lively expressions, and he began his career in a city where religious art was discouraged, focusing instead on secular portraiture.
