Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child — History & Facts
Saint Anthony of Padua kneels at the center, his entire body bent forward in a gesture of devotion as he embraces the Christ Child with his left arm. The Child Jesus sits atop a large book, his small body turned toward the saint, accepting the embrace and raising his right hand to point upward toward the heavens. The Child’s left arm rests on Anthony’s shoulder, and his legs dangle naturally over the edge of the book, a white cloth draped loosely around him.
Above the two figures, a cluster of cherubs hovers in a glowing cloud, their plump forms and rosy cheeks rendered with soft, swirling brushwork. The cherubs twist and reach toward each other, their wings and limbs overlapping, enveloped in golden light that streams down to illuminate the scene below. The background is a deep, shadowy brown, creating a dramatic contrast with the radiant figures and focusing attention on their interaction.
Light falls most strongly on the faces and bodies of Anthony and the Child, as well as on the lilies and the open book, highlighting their significance within the composition. The composition is arranged so that the figures form a diagonal from the lower left, where Anthony kneels, up to the upper right, where the cherubs gather, guiding the viewer’s eye upward. Small details, such as the knotted rope at Anthony’s waist and the subtle folds in his brown habit, are carefully observed and painted with a soft touch. The setting is undefined and atmospheric, with only a rocky ledge beneath the book and the saint’s feet, suggesting a spiritual rather than earthly space.
Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child was created by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo between circa 1668 and circa 1669.
