The Annunciation — History & Facts
Mary sits on her bed in a plain room, an adolescent in rumpled Middle Eastern peasant clothes with no halo, while the angel Gabriel appears only as a shaft of light. Henry Ossawa Tanner painted The Annunciation in 1898, soon after returning to Paris from an 1897 trip to Egypt and Palestine, made to experience the people, culture and light of the Holy Land. After the 1898 Paris Salon, it was bought for the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1899, the first of Tanner’s works to enter an American museum. The painting, oil on canvas, 144.8 × 181 cm, is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
