The Fall of the Rebel Angels — History & Facts

A swirl of winged angels in white and colored robes descends from the upper center, swords raised, driving a chaos of monstrous figures downward into darkness. The central figure, clad in golden armor with a blue sash, stands out as the archangel Michael, sword in hand, his shield marked with a red and white pattern as he strikes at the writhing mass below. On either side of Michael, angels in flowing garments and outstretched wings sweep downward, their faces serene and determined, contrasting with the grotesque forms beneath them.

The lower half of the painting is crowded with bizarre, hybrid creatures: fish with human faces, insects with armor, birds with the heads of people, and twisted bodies locked in struggle. Some figures tumble headlong, their limbs splayed, while others are caught in the jaws or claws of monstrous beasts, their expressions contorted in fear or rage. The color scheme shifts from the clear, luminous blues and whites of the heavens above to the murky browns, reds, and greens of the infernal realm below, heightening the sense of descent and turmoil.

In the upper left corner, three angels in yellow, pink, and blue robes blow golden trumpets as they descend through a patch of clear blue sky. Near the lower left edge, a creature with a helmeted human head and a fish tail clings to a spiked shield, surrounded by twisted limbs and armor. At the bottom center, a large moth-like figure with a human face and outstretched patterned wings dominates the foreground, its legs splayed among other fallen beings.

On the right edge, a pink, balloon-shaped monster with small wings and a human face floats amid a scattering of black insects. The light falls most strongly on the white-robed angels and the golden armor at the center, leaving the lower corners and monstrous forms in deeper shadow. Thin, precise lines define the contours of feathers, scales, and armor, while the paint is applied smoothly to create sharp edges and intricate textures.
