The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist — History & Facts

A young child, nude and with a faint golden halo, reaches out from his mother’s lap toward another child kneeling on the ground, who is wrapped in a garment of leaves and holds a small cross and a handful of fruit. The woman, dressed in a flowing red and blue robe, bends protectively over the child in her arms, her head gently touching his, her gaze directed toward the kneeling figure. Behind them stands an older man with gray hair and beard, his hand guiding the child’s outstretched arm, his expression soft and contemplative as he looks down at the two children.

The light falls from the left, illuminating the faces and bodies of the figures, while the background recedes into gentle shadow, with trees and foliage rendered in deep greens and browns. The composition is tightly grouped, with the figures forming a pyramid beneath the arching palm leaves, their gestures and glances drawing the viewer into the intimate exchange at the center. Fine, smooth brushwork creates a soft, almost glowing surface, especially in the flesh tones and drapery, while details like the curls of hair and the veins in the leaves are painted with precision. The subject is the Holy Family with the infant Saint John the Baptist, a theme that brings together the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, Saint Joseph, and the young John, as indicated by the title and the presence of the cross and animal skin.

Raphael created this work around 1513, during the period known as the High Renaissance, a movement characterized by balanced composition and harmonious forms. The museum’s description identifies the scene as a depiction of the Holy Family, with the child Saint John present.
