Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483–1520) was an Italian painter and architect associated with the High Renaissance. Born in Urbino, he was the son of court painter Giovanni Santi and managed the family workshop from age eleven. Raphael trained in the workshop of Pietro Perugino and was recognized as a master by 1500. He worked in several northern Italian cities before moving to Rome in 1508 to work for Pope Julius II, producing major commissions including the Raphael Rooms in the Vatican Palace and developing a large workshop, leaving a substantial body of work despite his early death at 37.
