The Return of the Herd — History & Facts

A winding procession of cattle and herders descends a steep, earthy hillside under the bare branches of late autumn trees. The herd, made up of brown, black, and white cows, moves from the lower left toward the center, their bodies closely packed and overlapping, with some animals turning their heads or lifting their legs mid-step. Several figures in rustic clothing guide the cattle: one man on horseback leads at the front right, while others walk behind or beside the animals, carrying long staffs and gesturing to keep the herd together.

A young boy in a red jacket and blue trousers stands at the left edge, pushing a cow forward with a stick, while another herder in a brown hat strides alongside the animals, arm outstretched. The trees at the left and right edges are nearly leafless, their trunks and branches silhouetted against a sky that shifts from pale blue to deep, stormy gray, with a single black bird perched high above. Beyond the figures and animals, the landscape opens into a sweeping valley, with a winding river reflecting the sky and dramatic, jagged mountains rising in the distance.

The colors are dominated by earthy browns, ochres, and muted greens in the foreground, while the middle ground glows with golden fields and the far mountains are rendered in cool blues and grays. Light falls unevenly across the scene, illuminating the river and distant slopes, while the foreground remains in shadow, adding a sense of depth and atmosphere. Small details, such as the texture of the cattle’s hides, the folds of the herders’ garments, and the scattered leaves on the ground, are rendered with careful, textured brushwork. The Return of the Herd was created by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565.

According to the museum, the painting is a landscape showing mountains, a river, and cattle.
