The White Goat Under the Moon (East of the Sun and West of the Moon) — History & Facts
A single white bear carries its rider through a world that feels both vast and secret, dwarfed beneath a looming blue arc and the delicate shimmer of a silver-leaved tree. The viewer’s eye is drawn first to the luminous moon and star, suspended in a sky that seems to bend and envelop the scene, then down to the gentle, almost dreamlike procession below. The bear’s massive form is rendered with a softness that belies its strength, while the figure atop it sits upright, hands gripping the fur, poised between trust and uncertainty.
The landscape itself is sparse but charged with atmosphere: jagged black pines on the left, a barren foreground, and the lone tree whose drooping branches echo the gentle descent of moonlight. Every detail is tuned to a mood of quiet wonder, as if the journey takes place in a world held together by enchantment and silence. Created by Kay Nielsen in 1922 for the illustrated book East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales from the North, this work stands at the crossroads of early twentieth-century illustration and the resurgence of interest in northern folklore. Such images were commissioned to bring fairy tales to life for a new generation, their delicate lines and ethereal colors shaped by the influence of Art Nouveau and Symbolism.
Nielsen’s illustrations, celebrated for their decorative elegance and haunting clarity, were part of a broader movement that saw artists across Europe reimagining traditional stories with a modern visual language. The world this work comes from was one of transition—between old myth and new art, between the printed page and the limitless landscapes of the imagination. The story continues in the image, inviting viewers to follow the bear’s path into the unknown.
