Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923) was a Spanish painter known for his portraits, landscapes, and large works with social and historical themes. Born in Valencia, he was orphaned as a child and raised by relatives. Sorolla studied art from a young age, continued his education in Madrid and Rome, and was influenced by modern painting during a stay in Paris. He achieved early recognition with works exhibited internationally, and his mature paintings often depicted Spanish people and landscapes in bright sunlight.
