John Glover

English, 1767–1849

John Glover was an English landscape painter and etcher, known for his works depicting the Australian landscape. He is considered one of the most significant artists of the colonial period in Australia. Glover was born in 1767 in Houghton-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, England. He trained as an artist in London, where he was influenced by the Romantic movement and the works of contemporaries such as J.M.W. Turner. Glover emigrated to Tasmania in 1831, where he became a prominent figure in the local art scene. His major works include 'View of the River Derwent' and 'The Artist's Garden in Tasmania.' Glover's style is characterized by a focus on natural beauty and a romanticized portrayal of the Australian landscape. He played a significant role in establishing a distinct Australian identity in art during a time when the country was still developing its cultural heritage.
