Austrian, 1869–1940
Leo Putz (1869–1940) was a Tyrolean painter whose work included Art Nouveau, Impressionism, and early Expressionism. He painted figures, nudes, and landscapes, and became a member of the Munich Secession. Putz taught and exhibited in Germany and Brazil, where his subjects and palette reflected tropical influences. Opposed to National Socialism, his art was labeled "degenerate," and he was forced to flee his home region after repeated interrogations.
