Spanish, 1838–1874
Mariano Fortuny Marsal (1838–1874) was a Spanish painter whose work reflected a Romantic interest in historicist genre scenes and military subjects related to Spanish imperial campaigns. Born in Reus, Catalonia, he lost both parents early and was raised by his grandfather, who introduced him to art. He studied in Barcelona and later in Rome, and in 1859 traveled to Morocco to document the Spanish-Moroccan War, producing sketches that informed later paintings such as The Battle of Tetuan. From 1870 to 1872, he lived and worked in Granada, establishing a studio and continuing his artistic production.
