Swiss, 1758–1844
Peter Birmann trained in Basel with his father, a stonemason, and later with Johann Ludwig Aberli before spending much of the 1780s in Rome, where he worked in the studios of Louis Ducros and Giovanni Volpato. A Swiss landscape painter, art dealer, and publisher, he became self-employed in 1785 thanks to the popularity of his watercolours and wash drawings among international travellers. After returning to Basel in 1790, he established a workshop, co-founded the Basel Artists' Society in 1812, and served on the city's councils. Influenced by Claude Lorrain and seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painters, he depicted Italian and Swiss landscapes, especially waterfalls and classical scenes, and his artistic estate was later bequeathed to the Kunstsammlungen Basel.
