Walter Crane

English, 1845–1915

Working in England, Walter Crane apprenticed as a wood-engraver and studied the Pre-Raphaelites, John Ruskin, and Japanese colour-prints. He became a leading illustrator and designer of children's books in the late 19th century, shaping the nursery motif in English children's literature. Active in the Arts and Crafts movement, Crane also created paintings, decorative arts, and socialist imagery, and advocated for democratic socialism through his art and political involvement.
