Almond Blossom — History & Facts

Pale almond blossoms cluster along twisting branches that stretch across a luminous blue sky. The branches, painted in strong, curving lines, fill the foreground from edge to edge, some crossing diagonally while others rise almost vertically. Each blossom is carefully shaped, with petals rendered in creamy whites and subtle pinks, their centers touched with hints of yellow and red.

The thick, textured brushstrokes give the bark a sense of depth and movement, with green and brown hues blending to suggest the rough surface of the wood. The sky behind the branches is a vivid, unmodulated turquoise, painted with sweeping strokes that create a sense of clarity and calm. No horizon or ground is visible; the entire composition is devoted to the flowering branches and the expanse of sky, creating a feeling of weightlessness and openness.

The branches overlap and intersect, forming a complex pattern that draws attention to the structure of the tree and the delicate forms of the flowers. The paint is applied in visible, energetic strokes, especially in the sky and along the edges of the branches, where the impasto catches the light. The lower left corner contains a thick, curling branch that appears closer and more prominent than the others, with deep green shadows accentuating its curves.

Near the top right edge, a few blossoms are painted with more pronounced outlines, making them stand out against the blue background. The background sky is subtly varied with swirling brushstrokes of lighter and darker turquoise, adding movement and depth to the flat color field. Along the edges and corners of the canvas, the branches sometimes extend out of view, creating a sense that the flowering tree continues beyond the frame. This is Almond Blossom, made by Vincent van Gogh in 1890 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.

The painting is recognized as a floral work, with every element focused on the natural beauty and structure of the almond tree in bloom.
