A Wheatfield, with Cypresses — History & Facts

Tall, dark cypress trees rise sharply on the right, their pointed forms dominating the horizon and standing out against swirling blue and white clouds. A golden wheat field stretches across the foreground, its surface animated by thick, energetic brushstrokes that suggest the movement of wind through the ripening grain. To the left, a silvery-green tree leans forward, its leaves rendered with curving, layered strokes of blue, green, and white, echoing the restless sky above.

The background is marked by a band of blue mountains, undulating gently from left to right and separating the fields from the sky. Above, the sky is filled with large, rolling clouds, painted in sweeping arcs of white, blue, and grey, giving a sense of turbulence and energy. The composition is divided horizontally, with the wheat field occupying the lower third, the trees and mountains forming a middle band, and the sky filling the upper half.

The palette is vivid, dominated by yellows, greens, blues, and whites, with bold outlines and visible brushwork throughout. Small red and white flowers appear at the very front edge of the field, adding detail and colour contrast to the golden expanse. The paint is applied thickly in places, creating a textured surface that catches the light and enhances the sense of movement.

A patch of bright green foliage curves along the lower right corner, its rounded shapes outlined in blue and yellow. Near the base of the cypresses, several smaller, bushy green shrubs cluster together, painted with short, choppy strokes. In the far left background, a thin strip of turquoise land meets the horizon, separating the wheat from the sky.

Light falls most strongly on the tops of the wheat stalks and the upper edges of the silvery tree, highlighting their textures. The lower left edge features a swirl of pale green and cream, blending softly into the wheat field. The blue mountains in the distance are streaked with darker blue lines, emphasizing their contours and adding depth to the background. A Wheatfield, with Cypresses was created by Vincent van Gogh in September 1889.
