Flowering Garden — History & Facts
A dense carpet of wildflowers fills the foreground, with vivid patches of red, yellow, blue, and pink blossoms set against thick green foliage. Brushstrokes are short, brisk, and layered, giving the flowers and grass a lively, textured surface that suggests movement and abundance. Toward the center and left, a band of bright yellow flowers stretches horizontally, bordered by a lighter patch of earth and a low wall in the background.
The upper part of the scene opens onto a view of a white-walled building with a red roof, set beneath a pale blue sky. Tall, slender cypress trees punctuate the horizon, their dark blue-green forms rising vertically and contrasting with the horizontal lines of the buildings and flowerbeds. A large, dark green bush or small tree casts shadow and mass at the right, its foliage painted with swirling, energetic strokes that echo the movement in the flowerbeds below.
Sunlight falls across the garden, intensifying the colors and creating a sense of warmth and summer brightness throughout the scene. The composition is arranged in broad, horizontal bands of color, with each layer of the garden forming a distinct zone of blossoms and foliage. Small details, such as the individual petals and the overlapping brushmarks, reveal the artist’s attention to the variety and vitality of the garden’s plants.
Paint is applied thickly in places, with visible texture that gives the surface a tactile, almost sculptural quality. The entire view is rendered with a bold palette, dominated by saturated primary colors and sharp contrasts between light and shadow. Flowering Garden was created by Vincent van Gogh in Arles in July 1888. The energetic handling of paint and radiant color scheme link Flowering Garden to the artist’s distinctive style from this period.
