Bowl with Zinnias — History & Facts

A rounded green bowl sits firmly on a flat surface, filled to overflowing with a dense bouquet of zinnias. The flowers crowd together in a mass of yellows, oranges, and reds, their layered petals rendered with thick, textured strokes. Several zinnias stand upright above the rim, their stems visible where they push up through the foliage.

Among the larger blossoms, smaller white flowers are scattered, adding contrast and depth to the arrangement. The bouquet is painted with visible, energetic brushwork, giving the petals and leaves a sense of movement and immediacy. The background is a dark, almost black space, painted with broad, vertical strokes that set off the bright colours of the flowers and bowl.

The table or surface beneath the bowl is painted in warm orange and ochre tones, echoing the colours of the zinnias above. The composition is tightly framed, with the bouquet filling nearly the entire canvas and only a narrow margin of background visible around the edges. Each flower is distinct but loosely defined, with quick, layered marks suggesting the ruffled texture of zinnia petals.

Some blossoms appear almost abstract, their forms broken into patches of colour and light. A small, pale yellow flower lies on the table at the lower left corner, detached from the bouquet above it. The background features loosely painted, blocky strokes of deep brown and black, with hints of reddish undertones near the upper right edge.

Tiny green leaves and stems peek out between the flowers, painted with quick, dotted marks that suggest their delicate texture. At the bottom edge, the orange tabletop is streaked with visible, horizontal brushstrokes, contrasting with the vertical marks of the dark wall behind. The subject is zinnias, arranged in a vase, as noted in the museum's description.
