First Sketch for ‘The Battle of Trafalgar’ — History & Facts
When the British Admiralty commissioned Joseph Mallord William Turner to paint the official record of the Battle of Trafalgar, they were entrusting the nation’s most celebrated painter with the memory of its greatest naval victory. The commission, given in 1822, was intended for the Painted Hall at Greenwich, a temple to Britain’s maritime glory. Yet, before the final grand canvas, Turner produced this First Sketch for ‘The Battle of Trafalgar’, a rare glimpse into the artist’s process as he grappled with how to capture the chaos and heroism of 21 October 1805, when Admiral Nelson’s fleet defeated the combined French and Spanish navies off the Spanish coast. Turner’s sketch freezes the battle at its most tumultuous: the decks of HMS Victory are crowded with figures amid smoke and cannon fire, the tangled masts of friend and foe locked together.
The artist’s energetic brushwork and swirling forms suggest confusion and violence, rather than the neat order of a parade. In the foreground, a fallen sailor lies across the deck, emphasizing the cost of triumph, while Nelson’s flagship looms as a battered but unbowed centerpiece. Unlike earlier depictions of naval battles, such as those by Nicholas Pocock, Turner abandons precise documentation for emotional immediacy, using light and movement to draw the eye across the carnage and glory. The medium of this sketch remains uncertain—possibly oil or watercolor on paper—but its purpose is clear: it was a working study, never meant for public display, but essential to Turner’s development of the final composition.
After its creation in 1823, the sketch remained in Turner’s studio, part of the vast trove of works bequeathed to the nation after his death in 1851. Today it is preserved as a testament to Turner’s restless experimentation and his unique vision of history painting, offering viewers a direct connection to both the artist’s hand and the drama of a nation-defining moment.
