Heliodorus Driven from the Temple — History & Facts

A dramatic struggle unfolds beneath a towering arch, where figures tumble and twist in violent motion across the temple steps. A figure in a red cloak tumbles backward at the lower right, his face contorted in fear, while another struggles to rise, gripping the edge of a step. In the gloom behind the central column, shadowy forms suggest a crowd witnessing the chaos, their faces barely discernible in the half-light.

The architecture looms with massive pillars and a high vault, painted in ochre and deep browns that contrast with the flashes of red, gold, and blue in the figures’ garments. Loose, energetic brushstrokes define the swirling bodies and flowing drapery, while the paint is thickly applied in some areas, creating a sense of movement and urgency. A deep arch frames the entire scene, its curve echoed by the composition’s sweeping diagonals and the dynamic poses of the figures.

A winged figure in golden armor dominates the left foreground, arm outstretched and shield raised, with a dynamic pose suggesting flight or descent. Near the bottom left corner, a dark green cloak and a fallen helmet are visible beside a toppled golden vessel, adding to the sense of chaos. A deep shadow falls across the central pillar, dividing the composition and accentuating the contrast between the illuminated golds and the darker browns.

The upper left edge shows a glimpse of another figure partially obscured by shadow, with a hint of red fabric and a faintly outlined face. Loose, swirling brushstrokes are especially prominent in the depiction of limbs and drapery, with lines dissolving at the painting’s edges and corners into abstract patches of color.
