Interior with Aline — History & Facts
When Paul Gauguin painted Interior with Aline in 1881, he was not yet the bold colorist of Tahiti, but a Parisian stockbroker and family man. The sitter, Aline, is his own daughter, captured in a rare moment before his fateful decision to leave family and career behind. This painting stands at a crossroads: it is one of the last domestic scenes Gauguin created before his radical transformation into a pioneer of Post-Impressionism.
The work quietly marks the end of one life and the uncertain beginning of another. The scene unfolds in a modest, sunlit room, where young Aline sits absorbed in her own world, her gaze lowered and hands resting in her lap. The interior is rendered with careful attention to the everyday—simple furniture, patterned wallpaper, a sense of order and intimacy. Gauguin’s brushwork is still restrained, echoing the influence of Impressionist friends like Camille Pissarro, but hints of his later boldness appear in the subtle contrasts of light and color.
Unlike Mary Cassatt’s lively portrayals of children, Gauguin’s Aline is introspective, almost melancholy, her stillness suggesting both the innocence of childhood and the emotional distance that would soon grow between father and daughter. Interior with Aline has followed a quieter path than many of Gauguin’s later, more famous works. Its early history is typical of his pre-Polynesian period: painted in Paris, likely kept within the family or among close friends, and rarely exhibited in his lifetime. As Gauguin’s legend grew, collectors and scholars began to seek out these early paintings, recognizing their role in tracing his artistic evolution.
Today, Interior with Aline is valued not only as a tender family portrait, but as a rare glimpse of Gauguin before the break—before the voyages, the experiments, and the myth.
