La Vision de Hugo (L'Assiette au beurre) — History & Facts
A figure looms at the center of La Vision de Hugo (L'Assiette au beurre), shrouded in shadow and draped in classical folds, yet unmistakably tormented. The hand pressed to the brow is not a gesture of calm reflection, but of anguish—perhaps even shame or horror. The word "JUSTICE" floats beside the figure, but the justice here is not triumphant; it is haunted, surrounded by streaks of blood-red descending like rain, pooling beneath bare feet.
The palette is stark, nearly monochrome except for that insistent red, which draws the eye insistently downward, forcing us to reckon with what lies at the figure’s feet. Created in February 1902 for the satirical periodical L'Assiette au beurre, this lithograph by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen belongs to a world where illustration was both protest and persuasion. The dates 1802–1902 and the title invoke the centenary of Victor Hugo, whose name had become synonymous with the fight for justice and the exposure of social wrongs. In the early twentieth century, such images were not mere decoration—they were interventions, printed cheaply and circulated widely to stir debate and conscience.
History has kept few traces of this particular print’s journey, but its urgency remains: the figure’s pain, the blood at their feet, the unresolved promise of justice. Stand before it and ask: what vision of justice do we inherit, and at what cost?
