Man with a hat decorated with pearls — History & Facts
A single figure emerges from deep shadow, his face turned in profile to the left and illuminated by a warm, golden light. He wears a broad-brimmed hat, its edge traced with a delicate row of pearls that catch the light and mark the painting’s title. The man’s features are rendered with thick, textured brushstrokes, giving his skin a sense of age and character, while his white collar stands out crisply against the dark background.
The background is almost entirely black, enveloping the figure and focusing attention on his face and the luminous pearls. The composition is tightly cropped, with the man’s head and shoulders dominating the frame and the rest fading into darkness. Small details, like the shimmer of the pearls and the subtle highlights on the man’s mustache and brow, reveal the artist’s careful observation of light.
No secondary figures or objects are visible in the composition; the man is alone against the darkness. The background remains uniformly deep brown and black, with no discernible details or variations except for subtle, textured brushwork. The lower right and upper left corners dissolve completely into shadow, with no clear boundary between the figure and the background.
Light falls most strongly on the sitter’s cheek, nose, and collarbone, leaving the rest of his body and hat in heavy shadow. Man with a hat decorated with pearls is painted by Rembrandt in 1662. The Yorck Project includes this painting among its 10,000 masterpieces of painting, distributed by DIRECTMEDIA Publishing GmbH. The museum’s records identify the materials as oil paint on canvas, which allows for the rich texture and depth of color visible in the work.
