An elderly man sits turned slightly to his left, his gaze lowered and unfocused, as if lost in thought. He wears a wide, dark beret that casts a shadow over his forehead and frames his weathered face. His features are marked by age: deep lines around the eyes and mouth, a grey beard, and a ruddy complexion that stands out against the muted background.

His heavy brown coat, rendered with broad, textured brushstrokes, envelops his figure and falls in loose folds, while a row of small buttons runs down the front of his dark garment beneath. The man’s right hand emerges from the shadow at the lower edge, its form loosely defined, with the knuckles and fingers just visible against the darkness of his sleeve. Light falls from the left, illuminating the left side of his face and the folds of his coat, while the right side recedes into shadow, creating a strong contrast that gives the portrait depth and presence.

The background is a warm, ochre-toned haze with no discernible details, focusing all attention on the sitter. The paint surface shows visible texture, especially in the highlights on the face and the rough weave of the coat, with looser, more expressive handling in the shadows. The composition is tightly cropped, with the figure filling nearly the entire canvas, his shoulders and hat pressing against the edges and emphasizing his physical and psychological weight. Portrait of an Old Man with Beret is created by Rembrandt in 1654.

The artist uses oil paint on canvas, building up the image with layered, textured strokes that capture the sitter’s age and mood.
