Portrait of Tommaso Inghirami, called Fedra — History & Facts
Tommaso Inghirami sits at a desk, turning his body slightly to his right, his gaze directed upward and away from the viewer. He wears a voluminous red robe tied with a pale cord at the waist, and a matching red cap that covers his head and ears. His left hand rests on an open book, while his right hand holds a quill poised above a sheet of paper, positioned near a black inkwell.
Inghirami’s face is rendered with great clarity, showing his pale complexion and the distinctive strabismus that causes his eyes to look in different directions. Light falls from the upper left, illuminating his face and hands, and creating subtle shadows in the folds of his robe and on the objects before him. The background is a deep, unmodulated black, which sets off the vivid red of his clothing and the pale tones of his skin and paper.
Brushwork is smooth and precise, especially in the modeling of the face and hands, giving the figure a lifelike presence. Details such as the gentle curl of the open book’s pages and the reflection on the inkwell are painted with careful attention. A second closed book with a decorated spine and cover lies beneath the open book at the lower right edge of the desk.
The background remains uniformly dark all the way to the edges and corners, with no visible objects or architectural features. The light striking the figure creates a gentle highlight along the top of his left shoulder and sleeve, while the right side of his body recedes into deeper shadow. The pages of the open book are tinged with a warm, yellowish hue, contrasting with the bright white of the sheet under his hand.
The folds and creases in the robe are softly modeled, with subtle gradations of red and orange suggesting the thickness of the fabric. A thin, dark line outlines the contour of his left hand and wrist, separating it distinctly from the sleeve and desk. Portrait of Tommaso Inghirami, called Fedra was created by Raphael between circa 1510 and circa 1511.
