As in his painting of the Morning Ride on the Beach (Gallery 1.18), Mauve shows the riders from behind. They are trotting away from the viewer in that silent wood.

In the watercolour, the bare branches contrast sharply with the misty background, lit by an almost imperceptible winter sun.

The whole scene seems to convey a sense of tranquillity and serenity.
