Saint Anthony of Padua with Christ as a child — History & Facts
A kneeling friar in a voluminous robe embraces a small, naked child who sits on his arm and presses his cheek to the friar’s face. The friar’s head is bowed and his eyes are closed, while the child gazes upward, one hand resting on the friar’s shoulder and the other on his chest. To the left, a winged cherub stands holding a tall stem of lilies, its gaze directed toward the central pair.
Another cherub sits at the lower left, absorbed in the pages of an open book, its small wings and plump limbs rendered with soft, rounded forms. Above, a cluster of four more cherubs emerges from a luminous cloud, their faces turned toward the scene below, some with arms outstretched in gestures of gentle blessing or curiosity. The background dissolves into a misty, atmospheric landscape, with faint foliage and distant hills barely visible through the glowing haze.
Light floods the upper left, bathing the child and the friar’s face in a radiant glow, while shadows deepen the folds of the friar’s habit and the earth beneath his knees. The composition is anchored by the diagonal formed by the friar’s bent figure and the child’s body, while the swirling clouds and floating cherubs create a sense of upward movement and celestial presence. Murillo’s brushwork appears soft and fluid, especially in the rendering of flesh and clouds, with subtle transitions of tone and delicate highlights on the skin and drapery.
The palette, even in monochrome, suggests gentle contrasts between the luminous figures and the darker, enveloping background. Bartolomé Estebán Murillo painted this work in the 17th century, between 1670 and 1680.
