Saint Michael — History & Facts
When the town of Borgo San Sepolcro commissioned Piero della Francesca in 1454 to paint a series of saints for their church, they could not have known that his Saint Michael would become a quietly revolutionary work. Unlike many depictions of the archangel as a fierce warrior, Piero presents Michael at a moment of calm after victory, his sword sheathed and his gaze steady. This painting is one of a group of panels created for the church’s high altar, a project that established Piero’s reputation as a painter of rare intellect and restraint. Saint Michael stands in gleaming armor, one hand resting on his sword, the other holding the scales of judgment.
The moment is not the heat of battle, but the aftermath: the dragon lies defeated at his feet, its form subdued and almost incidental. The archangel’s stillness, the precise geometry of his wings, and the measured fall of light across his figure all speak to Piero’s fascination with order and clarity. Where earlier artists like Fra Angelico favored drama and radiant color in their Michaels, Piero chooses balance and introspection.
The chain across Michael’s chest signals his role as protector and judge, the scales his authority over souls. The original ensemble of panels was dispersed over centuries, and Saint Michael’s journey is partly shrouded in uncertainty. While the medium is not firmly documented, the painting’s careful modeling and subtle color suggest Piero’s mastery of both tempera and early oil techniques. Today, Saint Michael is recognized as a key work in Piero della Francesca’s early career, marking his transition from local commissions to the wider acclaim that would follow.
Its serene authority continues to draw viewers into the quiet revolution of the Renaissance.
