Salome with the Head of John the Baptist — History & Facts

On the tray rests the severed head of a bearded man, his mouth slightly open and his eyes closed, blood visible at the neck. Beside her, an older woman in a white headscarf leans forward, her lined face tense with concern as she looks intently at the head. To the right, a muscular executioner with a furrowed brow grips the hair of the severed head, holding it upright for display; his other hand rests on the hilt of a sword at his waist.

The figures are pressed close together against a deep, shadowy background, with strong light falling from the left to illuminate faces, arms, and the reflective surface of the tray. The composition forms a tight, almost sculptural group, with each figure’s gesture and expression contributing to the drama of the moment. The background is an unbroken expanse of deep, velvety black, with no discernible objects or architectural features visible behind the figures.

The upper left and lower right corners of the painting are almost entirely swallowed in shadow, emphasizing the dramatic lighting on the central group. Light falls most intensely on Salome’s face, the executioner’s bare shoulder, and the rim of the golden platter, creating stark contrasts with the surrounding darkness. A thin white cloth drapes over Salome’s left arm and hand, its folds crisply highlighted, and her fingers are delicately curled around the edge of the platter.

The executioner’s robe is rendered in a dark, metallic gray, with deep folds catching the light across his chest and shoulder. A subtle reddish-brown tint appears in the shadows beneath the platter and along the older woman’s knuckles, adding warmth to the otherwise cool palette. Fine cracks in the paint surface are visible in the lighter areas, especially on the exposed skin and white cloth, revealing the painting’s age.

The older woman’s hand, partially clenched, presses against her chest, her knuckles and veins sharply defined by the raking light. Near the bottom left corner, the edge of Salome’s black dress is visible, its smooth surface contrasting with the textured white fabric draped over her arm.
