Caravaggio

Italian, 1571–1610

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), known as Caravaggio, was an Italian painter active mainly in Rome. He trained in Milan before moving to Rome in his twenties, where he became known for his dramatic use of light and shadow, a technique called tenebrism, and for depicting intense emotional and physical realism. Caravaggio’s life was marked by violence, including a fatal brawl that forced him to flee Rome, after which he worked in Naples, Malta, and Sicily. His style had a major impact on Baroque painting, influencing many artists, and his work was later reassessed in the 20th century as foundational to modern painting.
