St Luke the Evangelist — History & Facts
Lucas van Leyden is thought to have taught himself the complex art of engraving in copper through ceaseless practice and experimentation. In this early print, St Luke the Evangelist has made himself comfortable on the back of the animal that invariably accompanies him, a bull. Imperturbable, Luke continues writing his Gospel.
His inkpot hangs from the branch of a tree.
