The conclusion of peace in Angers, 10 August — History & Facts
On 10 August 1598, two royal brothers—Henry IV of France and his rebellious sibling, the Duke of Anjou—met in Angers to end a bitter civil conflict that had torn their country apart. This moment of reconciliation was so significant that, decades later, Peter Paul Rubens was commissioned to immortalize it as part of a grand cycle celebrating the life and reign of Marie de’ Medici, Henry IV’s widow. The painting stands as a testament not only to a pivotal peace in French history, but also to the political ambitions and self-fashioning of Marie herself, who sought to legitimize her regency through art. Rubens chooses the precise instant when the two parties, surrounded by courtiers and allegorical figures, clasp hands in a gesture of unity.
The composition is crowded with life: armored soldiers lower their weapons, olive branches and laurel wreaths signal the hard-won peace, and the goddess Pax hovers nearby, scattering flowers. Rubens’ swirling, energetic brushwork and dramatic lighting heighten the sense of relief and ceremony. Unlike Frans Pourbus the Younger, who depicted royal reconciliations with stiff formality, Rubens infuses the scene with theatrical movement and emotional warmth, making the political pact feel both grand and human. The painting is one of a vast series created for the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris, where Marie de’ Medici sought to enshrine her legacy.
Rubens, already celebrated as the leading painter of the Baroque, worked closely with the queen and her advisors, blending allegory and history to serve her narrative. After the Medici cycle was completed in 1625, the works remained in France until the 19th century, when they were transferred to the Louvre. Today, The conclusion of peace in Angers, 10 August is recognized as a key piece in understanding both Rubens’ diplomatic artistry and the visual propaganda of early modern Europe.
