The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence — History & Facts

A naked man lies stretched across a black iron grill at the center, his body twisting in agony as flames leap up from beneath him. His arms are flung upward, one hand open in a gesture of supplication or surrender, while his face turns toward the heavens. Around him, a crowd of figures presses in, their faces contorted with effort or cruelty as they force him down with iron rods and spears.

To the left, a man in a red cap leans forward, gripping the grill, while another figure crouches to stoke the fire with a pair of tongs. On the right, a muscular executioner in a green tunic strains to hold the martyr in place, while a richly dressed man on horseback, wearing a green hat, oversees the scene with a commanding gesture. Above the chaos, two winged cherubs descend from the dark sky, one holding a palm branch and the other a laurel wreath, symbols of martyrdom and victory.

The background is dominated by a vast architectural setting, with massive columns and arches receding into shadow, and a statue holding a torch stands on a pedestal to the left. Torches blaze at either side, their smoke swirling up into the gloom, casting flickering light across the figures and the stone walls. The color palette is dominated by deep browns, golds, and blacks, with flashes of red, green, and white providing dramatic contrast.

Brushstrokes appear loose and energetic, especially in the flames and the muscular bodies, giving the scene a sense of movement and urgency. The composition is crowded and dynamic, with diagonals created by limbs, weapons, and torches leading the eye toward the suffering central figure. Small details, such as the glint of armor, the texture of the stone, and the delicate feathers of the cherubs' wings, reveal the artist's attention to both drama and realism. The subject is the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, who, according to tradition, was roasted alive on a grill.

Titian painted The Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence between 1564 and 1567.
