The Story of Nastagio Degli Onesti, part two — History & Facts

A dense pine forest fills the scene, its tall, straight trunks dividing the composition into vertical bands and casting deep shadows on the green ground below. At the center, a dramatic episode unfolds: a nude woman lies stretched on the grass, her body rigid and pale, while a man in red bends over her, plunging a knife into her exposed back. To their right, another man in a similar red garment restrains the woman’s arm, his posture forceful and intent, while two black dogs lunge at her feet, their bodies tense and jaws open.

A white horse stands nearby, its head turned toward the violence, and a second horse, ridden by a figure in brown, gallops behind the central group, following the chase deeper into the woods. On the left, a young man in a blue tunic and red leggings recoils in horror, his right hand raised to his chest and his face twisted in anguish as he witnesses the brutal spectacle. Behind him, a stone fountain and a pair of deer stand quietly at the forest’s edge, their calm presence contrasting with the turmoil in the foreground.

In the distance, the forest opens onto a serene landscape of water and hills, with a small boat gliding across the pale surface of a lake or sea, and fortified towns visible on both shores. The light is cool and even, illuminating every detail of the figures and landscape, while the colors are rich but controlled: deep greens, browns, and the striking red of the men’s garments dominate the palette. The brushwork is precise, with crisp outlines and smooth transitions between forms, giving the scene an almost enamel-like clarity.

Every tree, leaf, and fold of fabric is rendered with meticulous care, and the composition guides the viewer’s gaze from the horror at the center to the tranquil background and back again.
