The Swing — History & Facts
A young woman in a pale blue skirt sits on a swing suspended from the branch of a tall, slender tree, her arms extended to grasp the ropes as she looks out with a gentle expression. A woman in a red bodice and ochre skirt sits on a rock in the foreground, her hand resting on the arm of a small girl in a dark dress, who turns toward the group of children. To the left, another woman in dark clothing sits with her back to the viewer, completing the group of three women and four children gathered in the foreground.
Behind the main group, the landscape opens to a sunlit clearing with soft green foliage, and in the distance, a carriage appears as a dark, blurred shape partly hidden among the trees. Three shepherds with their flocks can be seen in the far background, their forms rendered in loose, indistinct brushstrokes. The light in the painting falls most strongly on the children, illuminating their faces and clothing with a warm, golden glow, while the women and the surrounding greenery are painted in deeper, earthier tones.
The sky above is a soft blue, streaked with pale clouds, painted with broad, fluid strokes that echo the lively handling of the foliage and ground. Delicate details, such as the lace on the girls’ dresses and the patterns on the women’s bodices, are rendered with quick, textured brushwork that suggests rather than defines the fabrics. A boy in a yellow suit and blue sash sits on a fallen tree trunk at the far right, holding a stick and gazing toward the center of the scene.
The lower left corner of the painting is filled with green plants and rocks, painted with loose, textured brushstrokes. Sunlight highlights the upper branches and leaves of the tree, casting dappled shadows across the ground and figures below. The background at the upper left fades into distant blue hills, with a subtle transition between the landscape and the pale sky above.
