Vase of Flowers — History & Facts
In the final months of his life, Vincent van Gogh painted a series of still lifes in Auvers-sur-Oise, among them Vase of Flowers, created in 1890. What makes this work especially compelling is that it belongs to a feverish burst of creativity—over seventy paintings in just seventy days—completed as van Gogh grappled with his mental health and a sense of urgency. The painting stands as a testament to his relentless drive, even as his life neared its tragic end.
Unlike his earlier sunflower canvases, these late floral works are marked by a quieter, more contemplative mood. At the heart of Vase of Flowers is a simple bouquet, arranged in a plain vessel, set against a softly colored background. Van Gogh chose to capture the flowers at their peak, their petals open and vivid, yet some already beginning to droop—a subtle meditation on beauty and impermanence. The thick, energetic brushstrokes create a sense of movement within the stillness, while the color contrasts—yellows, whites, and greens—lend the scene both harmony and tension.
Unlike the formal arrangements of Henri Fantin-Latour, van Gogh’s flowers seem to burst from the canvas, untamed and alive, embodying his unique vision of nature’s cycles. The precise provenance of Vase of Flowers is not fully documented, as is the case with many of van Gogh’s late works. Painted during his stay in Auvers, it likely remained with his brother, Theo van Gogh, after Vincent’s death, before passing through private collections. Today, the painting is recognized as part of van Gogh’s final and most introspective period, reflecting both his technical mastery and emotional intensity.
Its current location is not always publicly listed, but it stands as a quiet jewel among the artist’s late still lifes, inviting viewers to share in the fleeting beauty he saw in the everyday.
