Venus and the Three Graces Presenting Gifts to Giovanna degli Albizzi — History & Facts
A group of five figures stands against a pale, cracked wall, with three women closely gathered on the left, a central woman in a flowing red gown reaching out to them, and a small child at the right edge. Behind the three women on the left, a large vase decorated with floral motifs sits on a plinth, its handle and painted details rendered with delicate brushwork. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like composition, their feet aligned along a dark floor, with the wall behind them providing a neutral setting that emphasizes their gestures and the soft, flowing lines of their garments.
Light falls evenly across the scene, highlighting the pale skin and golden hair of the women, while subtle shadows are used to model the folds of their dresses and the contours of their faces. The palette is dominated by soft reds, violets, greens, and creams, with touches of blue and gold, and the cracked surface of the paint reveals the work’s age and original fresco technique. Fine linear details define the features and hair of each figure, while broader, translucent washes of color create the effect of delicate fabrics and luminous flesh.
A leafy green stem with a red flower rises behind the vase at the upper left corner, partly obscured by the figures in front of it. The child at the right edge holds a piece of draped fabric in one hand and looks downward, with tousled hair and bare feet visible. A faint shadow falls on the wall behind the central group, especially visible beneath their hands and arms, adding a sense of depth.
The edges of the figures’ garments are outlined with fine, dark lines that define the contours and folds of the fabric. The background wall is divided by a vertical seam or crack near the center, which interrupts the otherwise continuous surface. In the lower left and right corners, irregular patches of missing paint reveal the underlying plaster, leaving blank areas that contrast with the richly colored figures. The painting is attributed to Sandro Botticelli and was created between 1483 and 1487.
