Water Lilies, Reflections of Weeping Willows — History & Facts
Large, rounded blue shapes cluster across the lower half of the canvas, suggesting the presence of water lilies floating on a pond. Above and behind these forms, vertical streaks of green, blue, and white descend from the top edge, evoking the trailing branches of weeping willows reflected in water. The surface is animated by loose, sweeping brushstrokes, with the paint applied in visible, layered marks that blur the boundaries between the lilies, the reflections, and the water itself.
Hints of red and yellow punctuate the blue and green, adding depth and contrast to the composition. The scene is bathed in cool tones, dominated by deep blues and greens, with lighter passages that suggest dappled light filtering through foliage. No horizon line or clear edge separates water from sky or land, immersing the viewer in a continuous, dreamlike space.
The composition is balanced horizontally, with clusters of lilies anchoring the lower right and left corners, while the vertical willow reflections create a gentle rhythm across the surface. At close range, the texture of the paint is pronounced, with thick, impasto strokes and areas where colors blend wet-into-wet. In the upper left corner, faint patches of pale yellow emerge among the blue and green, adding a subtle brightness to that area.
The lower edge of the painting is marked by a horizontal band of mossy green, suggesting dense vegetation at the water’s edge. A few thin, diagonal lines of dark blue cross the lower left quadrant, distinct from the more vertical willow reflections. Near the right edge, the blue lily shapes become more diffuse and blend into the background, losing their definition.
Small flecks of white pigment are scattered throughout the surface, creating a sense of light glinting on water. The upper right corner contains a concentration of deep blue forms, denser than elsewhere in the composition. Some areas of the canvas, particularly at the center, reveal a soft, smoky blending of colors with few hard edges.
The paint in the lower right corner appears especially thick and textured, with visible ridges and swirls from the brush. This work, titled Water Lilies, Reflections of Weeping Willows, was created by Claude Monet between 1916 and 1919.
